My interest in printmaking began in the late 80’s
at the University of New Hampshire. During my high school summer
breaks I worked for abstract expressionist Jules Olitski., where
I came across some of his drawings from the 60s. They were beautiful
fields of color with dots of color placed here and there. I was
struck by their simplicity and the way they resonated beauty. I
couldn’t take my eyes off of them. I wanted to make drawings
that felt like that. While at UNH I took a printmaking course and
became devoted to the process of creating layers of color on different
plates.
Today, my prints involve creating a surface that becomes an environment.
I begin each piece by thinking formally about color and shape.
I lay down layers of color, modifying the form and shape with each
layer. As each piece evolves I begin making references to nature
in some way---often very abstracted plant forms. Color and form
become paramount to the success of the finished work.
