James Florschutz employs elements of
nature and industry as a stimulus for conceptual manipulation.
He uses wood and stone, often combined with post-industrial materials,
to make sculptures that create a dialogue with nature and our society.
In using discarded
materials (by-products) from our society and culture James investigates
the ubiquity of sites, excavations and mapping. He believes that
these by-products have their own language and memories and that
each material offers its own resistance. James states " I
attempt to unite these diverse materials to reveal insights into
society's impact on the environment."
New England College Gallery Director, Jan Hodges, had this
to say about Florschutz’s work. "There is an honesty
about the way he uses his materials in both his sculptures and
works on paper. He uses space like a medium. Whether designing
an installation sculpture for a specific gallery space or creating
a sculpture or drawing, he is sensitive to the fact that the negative
space between pieces of wood, or marks on paper, are a lyrical
and necessary part of the whole."
The work of James Florschutz have been exhibited in solo and group
shows nation wide and at many universities and colleges throughout
the United States. In addition, his work is in many private and
corporate collections and he has been awarded several private and
public commissions.
James was born in Harrisburg, PA and received a BFA degree from
Florida International University.
