COLLAGES
They are an assemblage of work that was done while my husband
Dan Darrow was alive. He died 3 years ago. I started tearing up
my old artwork, which represented another life which was gone,
to create new images which reflected the life I was beginning to
piece together from the fragments.
The fragments consist of etchings, pastels, ink drawings and paintings.
Occasionally there are pieces of found paper or objects. There is
sometimes one significant image in it: a friend that is gone; an
animal or some other image that implies the impermanence or ephemeral
quality of life. I try to retain humor in some of the pieces.
Pottery
On greenware: (unfired, seasoned pottery) - the
piece is incised and carved with figures , animals, faces, botanical
images. It is then bisque fired. The incised areas and negative
spaces are then painted with wax resist. It is then glazed and
fired in the manner of raku. The stoneware is painted with a slip
and then the carving is done through the slip and the piece is
then glazed. The titles are often whimsical. They identify, but
do not always inform. Many of the themes involve various myths,
sagas, biblical themes playfully woven together. Foibles of friends
and colleagues may also become mixed in, somewhat hidden through
the ambiguous use of symbolic or mythic imagery.
